Tips for Writing a Resume

Aug, 27 2018

You are looking for job vacancies in Bangalore. A great profile comes your way. You want to get that job beyond doubt. But there are a thousand others like you contending for the same. For any employer to catch your stunning profile among thousands of others', an equally stunning resume has to be sent over. Resume-writing was initially just dumping of your work experience and educational qualifications. But over the years, resume-writing has formed into having its own code of writing.

Resumes are not just a list of where you worked and for how long. Neither is it a direct statement of your professional accomplishments. Getting you the job requires more than just putting down your work achievements on a sheet of paper. Your resume is a document that speaks of your personality as a worker. It needs to be given a firm and neat appearance as it tells of your communication skills and how committed you are to securing this job. So, don't take this task lightly. It requires much of your time and attention to ensure that your resume gets picked out and kept aside to schedule an interview with you. Here are some of the things that are required to make your resume stand out from the rest

What to write in the resume?

Although by now, many other sources could have told you just about what to write, these points can help you polish them to create an ideal resume.

Mention your accomplishments, not just your job description

Mentioning what you have done that led to some positive changes in your previous organization is very helpful. What you do is evident to everyone by now, but only you can tell them how you did it. This will help the recruiters to want to consider you for an appointment.

First comes the most important and relevant accomplishments

Highlight and mention those achievements that are important in your career growth. They must, of course, be relevant to the job you are applying for. Mention only that is related to the job profile and nothing that disinterests the recruiters. When you do land yourself in the interview room, you can possibly speak of your other achievements that may boost you up to getting the job.

Make it industry-appropriate

Not everything about your work accomplishments is required to be in the resume. But everything that is relevant to the job and industry you are applying for is certainly necessary to be mentioned. Again, within a particular industry itself, different job profiles demand different work experiences and skills. This is especially applicable if you are shifting career paths. Many jobs in Bangalore are often very specific with the profiles they receive given the number that apply. So, whatever job you are applying for in whichever industry, there must be a link to how you as an employee can solve or meet the organization's needs.

Your interests can tell a lot about your work priorities

Make your resume look and sound more impressive by revealing a little about your personality. Please note that writing down your interests refers to only certain appropriate interests. Indicate other interests you may have that would help you grow as a professional and as a person. For example, gardening can show you to be a patient person, a trait that everyone needs in a nerve-racking workplace.

Related keywords

With recruiters opting for AI to screen resumes and schedule interviews, it is very much applicable to have the appropriate keywords included in your resumes. Use resume building software to help you gauge and use job-specific keywords that fit in to make your profile preferable. This is very important because not having the right keywords may lead to rejection of your profile, costing you the opportunity to even have a personal interview.

How to write the resume?

Having all the information is not enough of you don't know how to present it well. Although there are many types of resumes, there are some tips that apply to all resumes for all times. In fact, these are the basics that must be kept in mind while designing one

Format

Knowing what type of resume you are trying to write will help you determine what format to use. However, every resume has a default format. You have to mention your name, contact details, educational qualifications, work experiences (if any), achievements, awards acquired, other interests, and if required, a career objective. Keep it short! A one or two-page resume is often considered a good length. But for certain specific job profiles, a longer one is accepted.

Typography

The text of the resume must be legible enough to read. So, use a font that is convenient to read. E.g.: Times New Roman, Ariel, etc. Avoid curvy and calligraphy fonts. Maintain the same font throughout. The size should be big (or small) enough to be read, preferably between sizes 10 and 12. But do keep your name and contact details bigger than the rest of the document. Highlight by bolding or underlining, wherever necessary. You can even use a different color, but only appropriately and not too often. Use a wise judgment of borders, alignment, tables, and outlines (if necessary). Break down the matter with bullet points and a good amount of white space wherever required.

Proofread

This is always a mandate that must not be told but known naturally. Read through your resume when you're done - many times. Ensure that there are no grammatical or spelling errors. Check for the alignment to be right. Ask a friend to read it for you to make sure that a fresh pair of eyes gets a good look at it for any mistakes. Don't forget to check for the correctness of your name and contact details.

PDF format

When the resume is ready to be sent over, it is recommended that you do so in a PDF format. This way your file does not lose its original formatting when the receiver opens it. It also makes the document look good and not disorderly so that the first impression is not lost as well. Save it in a businesslike fashion with your full name (your first and last name only if you have a longer name). Then, you can be sure that the receiver will know which one is yours among the hundreds of others he/she receives.

Creating a good resume can get you halfway on your journey of getting that job you're after. You don't have to be a master at it, but be sure that you do what is more than required to show that you deserve to get through to the next level of recruitment.
